We have begun researching our winter animals! Our research will take many forms, as it extends throughout our curriculum. We have begun by learning how to read and write our animal’s name. Our job tags now have animal names, the check off list is now made up of our winter animals and we have made winter animal name necklaces!

Our next job is to really start observing how our animals look. We will be reading, writing, graphing and drawing to document our findings. Everyone has made a finger puppet of their animal, which was an excellent way to ask each kindergartner take notice of the details which help identify their animal.  And the puppet theater out...

One of the goals of our Animals In Winter unit is to have the girls become researchers. We want them to generate questions and find ways to answer those questions. We have tons of non-fiction animal books, we have science teachers close by, and we have access to computers. We will also incorporate our word of the week into a fact-finding writing assignment. For example, our word this week is can. To introduce the girls to the feel of research, they had to look in a book to find one thing their animal can do. This fact was then recorded and illustrated. As their knowledge base grows, we will continue to challenge the girls in both finding information and recording facts, so that they will truly become an expert on their winter animal!
