Learning about Georgia O'Keeffe

We began learning about Georgia O'Keeffe by looking at many of her flower paintings.  

Once we had looked at her work, we went back and looked again, this time asking:

 why do you think Georgia painted flowers this way?  

Here is what we thought:

Daisy:  So people would know that she was such a great artist.

Georgia: She wanted people to think that it was a flower.

Gretel:  She wanted people to see all of the details.

Jordyn: She thought it would be pretty to make a big flower.

Lani: Because she wanted to make people really see the color.

Madeleine: Because she wanted people to see the picture.  She liked flowers a lot.

Naomi: Flowers are so tiny, so she studied the flowers and then she said, "I want people to see what is inside, so how about I paint that!"  She wanted everybody that went to the art museum to see a beautiful, beautiful flower.

Noa:  She wanted people to know what it was.

Olivia: So people can see the flowers better.

Quinn: So you can know that it is a flower.  If people can't see very well and she wanted them to see that it was a flower, then they can see the flower really well.

Rhea: People can see them and go, "Wow!"  People will really like it if she did it really big.

Samya: So you can see the inside.

Victoria: Because she wanted to use all the space to make the flower.  When people are studying about flowers, then they can look on the wall and they can study them.

We read about Georgia O'Keeffe and discovered we were right - she wanted to paint flowers big, so people would see flowers the way she did.

Then we got to work studying a flower and painting it big - 

so people can see the flower the way we do!
