Now that we have a sense of how the Southwest looks and feels, we are ready to begin to look at what makes the Navajo Americans special and unique. This week we have talked about the traditional home, which is called a Hogan and made using mud and sticks and we have started to learn how Grandmothers teach their daughters how to weave and how this tradition is passed down through the generations. We have talked about how important turquoise and silver jewelry is to the Navajo and how the four mountains surrounding the Navajo Nation create Navajoland. Are Navajo research folders are starting to fill up!

To really immerse ourselves into this cultural unit we have all given ourselves Navajo names. Long ago, the Navajos were named for attributes or abilities which stood out about that individual. In half groups, we highlighted each girl and pointed out her many strengths and talents. Each KC girl was then asked to pick her own Navajo name. Can you guess which special quality your daughter choose to name herself?

In math we have designed and solved more subtraction stories! This time, the girls had to use Southwest animals to create their own subtraction equation. It turns out that subtraction is easy when you are dealing with poisonous desert creatures!
