We will be spending the month of October becoming insect experts! We will be combining this science & art unit with an author study of Eric Carle. While we will be focusing on Eric Carle's insect books, we will also be learning about his award winning artistic style. On Tuesday we watched Eric Carle himself explain how he makes his art in a short movie, "Eric Carle: Picture Writer." Knowing the basic steps, we started making paper - Eric Carle style! We will be using our Eric Carle paper to make insect collages, both for ourselves and to help create a kindergarten mural!
In math we have been catching and counting fireflies! After reading Ten Flashing Fireflies, we made up our own firefly addition problems. These great addition stories have been compiled to make our third class book! Come read how many fireflies your daughter caught and how many are still in the night sky.
We are recording the number of books we read in the classroom! We have a basket which has a ones space, a tens space and one hundreds space. Every time we read a book to the whole class, 1 straw goes in. So far we have read over 40 books this fall in KC! Every time we reach 100 books, we will have a book party to celebrate. During rest time I read chapter books, which provides the girls opportunities to rely upon their own imaginations as they hear the story unfold. So far, we have read Ramona the Pest and everyone enjoyed hearing about Ramona's ups and downs in kindergarten.
